For many Surinamese students moving to the Netherlands, the journey begins with big dreams. Yet the reality is often less straightforward. Challenges such as housing, finding work, building a network, and simply navigating life in a new country can feel overwhelming. Especially in those first months, the difference between succeeding and giving up can be small.

That is exactly why the initiative SUholland, founded by Business Studies student Sheovan Deira (Hogeschool Inholland), is so valuable.
SUholland has grown into an active community for Surinamese students within Inholland (a Dutch University). Through meetings, events, and mutual support, the network helps students find their footing more quickly — both socially and professionally. It is more than a student group; it serves as both a safety net and a springboard.
What makes the initiative even stronger is its focus on creating opportunities. Sheovan is currently developing her own cleaning company named VIK, focused on public spaces and offices, with the intention of employing Surinamese students. In this way, she combines entrepreneurship with social impact: making it easier for students to balance studying and working.
Recently, SUholland and SEUBC (Suriname–EU Business Council) started conversations to connect and strengthen each other’s networks. Through this collaboration, a bridge is being built between Suriname and the Netherlands, enabling students not only to find social support, but also access to internships, jobs, and professional connections.
This is exactly where strong communities make a difference:
not only coming together, but moving forward together.
Initiatives like SUholland show that real development starts with people helping each other grow. And that is a movement that can only continue to expand.
